Killarney Town & National Park
Killarney has long been a tourist
destination, and the town itself has an extensive choice of restaurants & pubs
famous for their craic and warm welcome. The area is steeped in history and
heritage; you can take a ride in a horse-drawn-cart around the town or follow
the mining trail on Ross Island which dates back 4000 years. There are boat
trips across the Lake, which give you the option of visiting the 6th
Century Monastic Ruins on Innisfallen Island. You can take a guided tour around
15th Century Ross Castle, or Muckross House and gardens.
Killarney National Park is a popular
destination for artists and outdoors enthusiasts alike and is set in an area of
stunning natural beauty beside the Three Lakes & the Macgillicuddy's Reeks which
includes Irelands highest mountain, Carrantuohill. Killarney is on the Ring of
Kerry which follows the rugged coastline of the Iveragh peninsular.
There are no less than 43 golf courses
within a two hour drive of Killarney, and our studio is just two minutes walk
from Ross Golf Club - contact (064) 31125. The National Park is a walking
destination equal to any in the world, and there is no shortage of choice, from
gentle lakeshore walks to serious mountain hikes. You can find more details on
these walks at
www.killarneyguidedwalks.com.
There is a variety of other sporting
activities, including horse riding through the woods or on the beach at Ross Beigh, river or sea-kayaking, or fishing for wild salmon etc.
Improve your football or hurling skills with
www.gettheedgeinkerry.com Hire a bike and
cycle the tarmac paths around the lakes, or go off-road on a mountain bike.
Climbing is superb at Doonsheen or the Gap of Dunloe, with a welcome pint or
Irish coffee afterwards at historic Kate Kearney’s Cottage. Outings can be
arranged for the beginner to the more experienced, through nearby outdoor
centres, which we will be pleased to recommend. More details can be found
on www.outdoorsireland.com
If all that leaves you breathless, you
can book in for a luxury treatment at one of the local spas. From personal
experience, they are well worth a visit!
Killarney National Park is home to all
kinds of wildlife, including the native Red Deer & the Japanese Sika Deer, which
can often be seen in the woods beside the studio. Bats flit across the garden at
dusk, and badgers come and dig holes in the lawn at night (!). There are many
types of birds from the White Tailed Eagle which was introduced into the
National Park last summer to the grey heron swooping low over the river Deenagh.
Rooks nest in the tree tops, & woodland birds such as finches, blue-tits and
robins are frequent visitors to the garden and can be watched from the studio
windows.
